A fine Italian 19th century heavily carved Sgabello side chair. The entire front surface of each is hand carved and is beautifully sculpted. Beautiful women adorn the sides and men's faces adorn the center below the seat and at the top of the back.
Known as sgabello, derived from scabellum (Latin for ‘stool’), these lived bn the entrance halls of Italian Palazzos to demonstrate the wealth and importance of their owners and families. These hall chairs were placed against the wall and subsequently didn’t need to be decorated on the back.
