Vintage Rugs and Sustainability

In our second generation of ownership, Litt Concept House's passion for sustainability is stronger than ever – it's one of the main pillars of our brand. When we launched The Rug Room, we wanted to make an easy, one-stop-shop for beautiful, one-of-a-kind rugs. We also know the value of vintage rugs from an environmental and quality standpoint, they are truly the ultimate sustainable choice in home decor.

Why Vintage Rugs?

Vintage rugs are a sustainable purchase for many reasons. Vintage rugs are typically made from all-natural wool fibers that are hand-spun, in fact some weavers even use wool sourced from their own sheep. The dyes used to color the rugs are also often natural and derived from locally sourced plants and vegetables.

All the rugs we source are also crafted by hand, often hand-loomed and knotted – never machine made. Mass manufactured rugs can be incredibly damaging for the environment. They are typically made of plastic and not biodegradable, they will sit in landfills for hundreds of years emitting harmful chemicals.

Meanwhile, vintage rugs are incredibly durable – made to last generation-after-generation. In fact, many of our vintage rugs are already over 50 years old and will likely endure for many more decades, far surpassing the average lifespan of modern manufactured rugs (which is only about five years).
